Clay Soil
Clay soils are the dominant soil type in Canberra which often get a bad rap from gardeners but with some careful modifications you can create an environment where your plants thrive.
Clay is ‘thicker’ than sand or loam making it harder for plant roots to penetrate. This slows plant growth. When clay soils get wet they can be boggy and when dry they can set like concrete, again slowing plant growth and, in some instances, killing the plant.
How we work with soils.
At Growing Envy we only use liquid formulations. Over cultivating clay turns the soil to dust making it prone to erosion and compaction. This is harmful to plant roots and the microorganisms and worms we rely on to work the soil.
We use a liquid gypsum to gently break down bonds, replacing sodium with calcium which allows pockets to form and tunnels for roots, worms and microbes to move through. The liquid form gives us even coverage and faster results.
We also use soil improvers like seaweed and amino acids which feed the soil microbes building healthier soils and stimulate plant growth and resilience. (see Nutrients)
